Store of value

The business of storing digital data is recovering from some pandemic bumps, according to research group IDC.

Global sales of external storage systems to businesses grew to $6.9 billion during the second quarter of 2021, up 9.7% from the same time last year. IDC defines such systemss as a set of storage elements, including controllers,, cables and host adapters associated with three or more disks.

Dell Technologies, which includes EMC, maintained its lead as the biggest storage systems supplier, accounting for 26.8% of worldwide revenue. Hewlett Packard Enterprise was second with 10.9% of revenue.

Among the biggest shifts came from Huawei, which is tied for third place with NetApp but saw a 26.7% spike in revenue. The biggest decline was for IBM, which dropped 36% from the same time last year, sharing fifth place with Hitachi and Pure Storage.

IDC research manager Zsofia Madi-Szabo says the degree to which demand returned for storage systems this year was highly influenced by the rate at which each regional economy has recovered from the difficulties associated with the global pandemic.
