Airport history

Work started in 1944 to purchase the land for the airport. J.C. Knott Jr. brought the proposal to the City Council under the administration of Mayor D.W. Peel Jr. Knott proposed buying about 100 acres in south Bentonville and a committee was established to study the idea. A group of residents through the Chamber of Commerce raised $5,000, and the City Council voted to put another $4,000 toward the purchase of the 100-acre tract. The land purchase was for $100 per acre. The airport opened in 1946.
